Please use the following checklist to prepare your personal computer for connecting to our network.
ResNet provides free Internet access to all residence hall students. All halls have a wired Ethernet connection, except for Brannen Hall and University Villas which are wireless. Centennial Place and Watson Commons have both.
Wireless access is also available in many locations across campus. If you are purchasing a new computer, we recommend a laptop for convenience. Most laptops purchased in the last few years have both a wired Ethernet card and wireless network card built-in. If you are purchasing a new computer, the U-Store offers huge discounts on Lenovo and Apple computers.
To help protect your computer files and personal information from hackers, and to keep the campus network running at optimal speed, Georgia Southern has implemented Cisco's Clean Access network security solution. You can read more about Clean Access here: http://cca.georgiasouthern.edu.
Enable Windows Updates to automatically install on your PC.
Make sure all Windows updates and service packs are installed before you arrive.
Verify that your anti-virus program is compatible with our Clean Access system by checking the list here: http://cca.georgiasouthern.edu/avsupport.php *Note - the newest versions of these programs (2009/10) may not yet be compatible with the Cisco Clean Access system.
OR
Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials software from home FREE of charge. *Note: Before starting this download, please be sure to properly uninstall all previous antivirus products from your computer through your Control Panel > Add and Remove Programs feature.
Make sure your antivirus program has automatic live updates enabled.
Make sure that your virus definitions are up-to-date.
Obtain a Category 5 Ethernet cable to connect your computer to the wall jack in your room. We recommend bringing an extra cable to leave plugged into your wall jack to prevent damage to the jack from wear and tear.
Verify that your computer has a wireless network card if you are living in Brannen Hall or University Villas.
Open the network properties on your computer, and set the TCP/IP properties of your network card (NIC) to "Obtain IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS automatically" (DHCP). Caution - if you are connecting to an Internet Service from home, do not change these settings until you are ready to pack up.
Leave routers and switches home. Network devices such as routers (wired or wireless) are NOT permitted according to Georgia Southern's Computer Use Policy which is available here: http://services.georgiasouthern.edu/its/policy.php.
Bring your game console. If your computer is not up to date before you arrive, the connection process could be lengthy. Please perform these steps before you arrive!
