Residential Communities

When you think about your hopes for your college experience, you envision a life full of new learning experiences. Much of what you learn at Georgia Southern University will take place outside of the formal classroom. Living on campus gives you the opportunity to fulfill that vision through housing's residential communities.

What is a residential community, and why would I want to live there?
Residential communities are composed of students who live together in a residence hall and have a common interest that serves as the central theme of the community. With the help of trained residence hall staff members, students structure programming and community standards to promote their community's purpose. Some of the residential community's learning experiences are focused, but often learning experiences are so subtle or fun you don't even realize you're learning! So why would you want to live in a residential community? Research has found that if you live in an on-campus living/learning community:

  • You are more likely to make better grades than your peers living off campus
  • You are more likely to stay in college and graduate
  • You will feel more comfortable approaching faculty members
  • You are more likely to participate in extracurricular activities
  • You will be more satisfied with your overall college experience

What types of residential communities are available to me?
One of the most important factors you should consider when making your housing decision is what a residential community can do for you. You will want to consider the different types of communities available in the various residence halls. These communities range from being structured and academically-oriented to having no predetermined orientation. The information in this section will help you decide which residential community is right for you.
