Residential Interest Groups (RIGs)
RIGs are clusters of roughly twenty six students who share a major or interdisciplinary interest. The RIGs are the most academically intentional of the Living/Learning Communities at Georgia Southern. Students in RIGs take seven hours of coursework with the same group of people in the fall. Most will take three hours in the spring as well. The RIGs allow residents to develop relationships with other students who share an interest while they are still taking general education courses.
Program Goal: Participants will integrate academics, campus involvement, and residential living into their first year at the University in a purposeful, cohesive, and seamless fashion.
Objectives:
- Participants will take part in reserved classes of the core curriculum with other first year students having similar majors or interests.
- Participants will develop a purposeful relationship with the faculty in their academic college and create peer reference groups.
- Participants will have multiple opportunities for field trips, social programs, academic discussions, intramurals, and leadership development.
- Participants will have access to resources and staff to enhance students' academic and social success at the University.
- Participants will develop communication skills, interpersonal leadership, relationships, and multicultural and diversity awareness.
Required Classes:
Students in each RIG take University Orientation (a required course for all first-year students in their first semester) and English Composition I (a state requirement for graduation). Both of these courses are taught by faculty with an interest in the RIG, and writing in the Composition course is geared toward the RIG subject matter. In addition to these two classes, students also take one other core course that has a connection to the RIG and fulfills a requirement for graduation. Because spaces in classes are being reserved exclusively for residents in RIGs, participation in the specific section reserved for a student’s RIG is required. Exceptions are made only with prior approval for academic reasons. Due to the highly structured nature of their programs, music and engineering majors are not eligible to participate in RIGs. If you have a specific roommate request, your roommate must also request the same RIG.
