What is a RIG?
Residential Interest Groups (RIG) are clusters of approximately 22-32 students who share a major or interdisciplinary interest and are located in Eagle Village 2. The RIG is the most academically intentional community at GSU. Students in RIGs take several hours of coursework together in the fall. Most will also take three hours together in the spring. The RIGs allow residents to develop relationships with faculty in the major and with other students who share similar interests.
What are the requirements in a RIG?
Students in each RIG take University Orientation (a course required for all first-year students in their first semester) and most will also take ENG 1101, English Composition I (a state requirement for graduation). Classes are taught by faculty with an interest in the RIG. Writing in the Composition course is geared toward RIG subject matter. Students also take one other core course that has a connection to the RIG and fulfills a requirement for graduation. Because spaces in classes are reserved exclusively for residents in RIGs, participation in the specific section reserved for a student’s RIG is required.
How will being in a RIG enhance my academic career?
Choosing to participate in an academically focused community gives you the opportunity to seamlessly integrate academics, campus involvement, and residential living into your first year at the University. RIGs are designed so that you can take part in reserved classes from the core curriculum along with other first year students who have similar interests or majors. This allows you to develop relationships with faculty in your major’s academic college and become part of student groups that can help and encourage you on your academic journey. You will have many opportunities for field trips, social programs, academic discussions, intramurals, and leadership development. And finally, you will develop communication and leadership skills, interpersonal relationships, and multicultural and diversity awareness. Please use the chart below to help you decide which RIG might be right for you.
